Live voice rooms vs Discord voice channels
Both let people talk by voice. They are built for different situations: one is organised around servers people set up, the other around rooms you can drop into.
How Discord voice channels work
Discord is organised around servers. A server has text channels and voice channels, and the people who run it decide who can join and how it is moderated. You usually arrive with an invite, then stay.
That makes it a good fit for a standing group, such as a club, a study group or a team that talks regularly.
How live voice rooms work
A live voice room is discovered from a list of rooms. Each has a host, a topic and seats. You can listen first and speak when you are ready. Some rooms are also on video.
That makes it a good fit for meeting people you do not already know, or for a one-off conversation around a topic.
How to choose
If you already have a group and want a long-lived home for it, a server is a natural choice. If you want to meet new people around a topic tonight, a live room is quicker to start with.
Many people use both. Nothing stops a friendship that starts in a live room from continuing somewhere else, as long as everyone is comfortable.
